Document Analysis

Document Analysis (5% – c. 500 words) Primary sources are writings that were produced by individuals or groups at the time of the historical events or issues that they deal with. A number of such documents have been placed on Blackboard, organized by course unit. This assignment requires you to select any ONE of these documents and critically analyze its content and historical significance. To do that, you will need to consider and answer some basic questions: • Who is the author of the document? • What kind of document is it? • When and where was it produced? • Why was it produced – what was its likely purpose? • Who was the intended audience, and how might they respond to the document’s content? While it may not always be possible to answer all of these questions, by applying critical analysis to your chosen document you should be able to draw some reasonable conclusions about its historical importance.
