PART A

In this week’s readings, we read of the cult and culture of celebrity and the characteristics of new religious movements (NRMs).

  • Given these marks of NRMs, name a celebrity (politician, entertainer, businessperson) who exhibits these traits and whether or not you think consumers, fans, or followers can become disciples. Is this a dangerous trend? Have celebrities become the new priests and prophets of our day?
  • Be sure to respond to at least one of your classmates’ posts. Responses should be substantive, provide additional context, and provide evidence (cite source) to support ideas. Dialogue should be meaningful, constructive, and respectful.

PART B

Please respond to the following:

  • Now that we have looked at religion and religions, let’s go back to where we started. What is religion? And how has our study changed your view of people, cultures, and life? Last, share how it might be useful in the workplace and community?
  • Be sure to respond to at least one of your classmates’ posts.
